GYNECOMASTIA or “man boobs” as they are often referred to, is the abnormal development of large mammary glands in males resulting to breast enlargement. This is caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, and sometimes unevenly. This may affect not only one age group as newborns, boys going through puberty and older men may develop gynecomastia as a result of hormonal changes. For many men, having gynecomastia is a painful experience; it impacts their social life and self-confidence.
Breast prominence is classified as; "Puffy nipples" is among the most common forms of gynecomastia, typically confined in the areola or outside the areola forming a dome shape. The next one is Pure glandular gynecomastia, frequent in bodybuilders and may be a result of the use of anabolic steroids known as abolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) induced gynecomastia. While, Congenital or hereditary gynecomastia is typically evident by the ages of 12 to 18 in boys, 30% may live with enlarged male breasts for the rest of their lives, but in other cases the gynecomastia will recede with age.
The prognosis of Gynecomastia is not physically harmful, but in some cases can be an indicator of other more serious underlying conditions. Weight loss can alter the condition where it is caused by obesity, but losing weight will not reduce the glandular component.
Gynecomastia correction primarily involves the reduction of glandular fatty tissue through surgical removal. This technique is used in conjunction with liposuction of any surrounding fatty tissue to achieve an ideal result. These are the basic elements of gynecomastia surgery, but each case is unique and is evaluated on an individual basis. Hence, assessment of each gynecomastia case and determining a surgical plan for that specific individual is very crucial so that their unique surgical goal can be achieved.
